Reference checks, a thing of the past or an important tool in not just validating work history but determining a strong character profile?
Reference checks are still 100% relevant AND essential in forming an opinion on the suitability of a candidate for a role – as long as they are used properly!
The problem employers face is that the limitation to disclose information and the decrease in reference writing as a skill has created a situation where many organisations now have a policy of not effectively providing a reference due to the very limited information they can willingly provide.
This leaves many employers at an impasse questioning the value of reference checks AND many employees question whether they should include them at all!
After all, they can be time-consuming for both parties! So how can you ensure you get the most value from the exercise?
- Provide both a personal and professional reference
- Ask what the employer would like to see in the reference
- Provide contacts to the RIGHT person at your previous organisation
- Always ask your references if it is okay to use them and brief them if they may get called
While reference checks can seem outdated to employees, providing simple and informative references gives both the employee and employer the greatest likelihood of success in the endeavor!
